11 Classic Bands Who Changed Their Names
Posted on Sat, 12 May 2012 04:09

There is been fairly a spate of name-changery going on in the indie rock ranks correct now, as people like DIIV (FKA Dive), VÅR (FKA War), and POP ETC (FKA the morning benders) have decided to change stuff up (albeit for different, totally respectable reasons). So, we figured it was time to take a look back on other band name changes from lessonic bands. POP ETC, VÅR, and DIIV, in the context of this blog post, you are in good company!

11 Classic Bands Who Changed Their Names
The Hype > U2: David Evans' (The Edge) older brother Dik was a member of U2's original lineup, then called "The Hype." Dik was in college, and thus older than the older four band members, so he eventually became a fifth wheel. Memorably, he walked off the stage during the Hype is last concert as a five-sneak peek. A friend of bassist Steve Averill helped them come up with a new name, offering six options. U2 was the one they disliked the least.

Radiohead's Thom Yorke: 'I can see why 'The King Of Limbs' alienated people'

Radiohead's Thom Yorke has said he can see why the band's eighth album 'The King Of Limbs' alienated people.

Szenithing to Rolling Stone magazine, the singer said of the album, which was released as a download with just a week's notice with no publicity by the band:
It was amazing just to put the record out like that. But then it didn't feel like it really existed…But that was the consequence of what we chose to do. You can either get upset about it, or say, "well, that is not good enough."
He added: "I can see why it is alienated people. I didn't realise it was on its own planet".

The band are currently touring North America in support of the album and will play three UK shows in the autumn at Manchester's Evening News Arena (October 6), and London's O2 Arena (October 8 and 9).

Szenithing of the duncookedn-out recording process for the album, Jonny Greenwood added: "The brick walls we tended to hit were when we knew something was fantastic, like 'Bloom', but not finished. We knew the song was almost something. Then Colin had that bass line and Thom started singing. Those matters created it a hundred times better. The other stuff was just waiting for the correct thing."

Radiohead have been playing two new songs, 'Identikit' and 'Cut A Hole', as part of tinheritor recent live set.

Benedict Cumberbatch's Top 10 Tunes

Benedict Cumberbatch's Top 10 Tunes

Today, not just one of the world's finest actors, but hands down the actor with not only the most difficult name, but simultaneously the most distinguished name ... Mr Benedict Cumberbatch! (And here we hasten to add that Benedict is completely not to be confused with those somewhat lesser actors Burnybun Crumblybatch, Binder-twine Cummerbund or flexibledick Lumbercrutch.) No, it is Benedict himself ... we're delighted he is here as our Special Guest DJ, not only because he is an avid music fan, but also because (and this is a first we believe for Dayglo DJs), he can actually dance! Gather round, yokels and other denizens of the Deep South, and see how it is done - all the way from the dives of Soho and the South Bank, here he is to show us the latest dance craze from the North (and here thanks to The Hobbit and Peter Jackson) ... Mr Betterfit Clumsypants!

As for his acting ... well you know him best for ... well, just about everything ... because he is in just about everything! we have just been watching him in the wonderful Sherlock -- big ups, bro -- next shit you know he is in JJ Abrams new Star Trek, Spielburg's War Horse, Tinker Tailor, having been fantastic in Atonement, Creation, and Amazing Grace, and so on.

We got to know him in South Africa on To the Ends of the soil (BBC), just after he'd astonished us all as Stephen Hawking in Hawking ...but look, he does not need any more spruiking from us here in the Dayglo, his career has more secondum than a runaway train. And he, like us, is here to do the boogie-woogie. Here he is, the best of fellows, a miraculous actor, and an excellent friend...applause to the max please for the fantastic...Mr BENEFIT BLUNDERBUS!

10 onstage freak outs
Posted on Sun, 11 Mar 2012 22:04

Being in a musician is hard - in fact it could make you go loopy. After hearing about Deerhunter's Bradford Cox playing an hour-long cover of My Sharona final week, during a show by his side project Atlas Sounds, our reaction was not so much "that is bizarre" more "oh no, it is happening again". Let's face it being onstage is a tightrope act and when you fall, you fall hard. you have got to play all the correct paper money... in order... in tune... and that is before you even bring the audience into the equation, who on some nights can little more than a collection of drunkards, hecklers and drunken hecklers. So really it is a surprise there aren't more onstage freak outs really, because as these ten seconds of musical insanity show, it can happen to the best of em'...

Josh Homme
"Dickless turd"
The definition of don't give a shit, rock'n'roll cool, even the Queens Of The Stone Age leader is immune to an outburst. In Josh Homme is defence he did have a "102 measure moodature" and had been "puking for three days" when his band arrived at Oslo's Norwegian Wood festival in 2008, but even so if you are going to throw stuff at him you probably should expect to be called a "12 year-old dickless turds" and have a bottle or two 'returned' from the stage.

10 Amazing Songs Without Choruses
Posted on Fri, 02 Mar 2012 18:56

you have seen our 50 most explosive refraines of all time. But what about songs that do just fine without any kind of refrain at all?

10) Squeeze - 'Up The Junction'

Glenn Tilbrook's tale of the rise and fall of a relationship takes in a party, pregnancy, marriage, cheating and divorce - all within three minutes. So it is hardly surprising that they decided to chuck the refrain - how else would they fit everything else in?
