'Avengers' Director Joss Whedon on Trying to Be More Like Buffy

Joss Whedon has the kind of credibility that only comes from repeated failure. To his intensely devoted fans, Whedon isn'thing less than a genius, the hyperliterate auteur who made the cult hit “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and would have minted a half-dozen other self-aware genre franchises by now if it weren't for the everultimateing obtuseness of network and studio executives.

Which is why they are all the more frenzied about this week's opening of “The Avengers.” After years of treating Whedon like a cog, one of those corporate behemoths - Disney's Marvel Entertainment - has ultimately cottoned to the apparent: that there is no one in Hollywood better cut out to make a superhero flick that hardcore nerds will embrace and civilians won't be embarrassed to see.

I spoke to Whedon in early April, in the midst of a flurry of activity that was intense even by his standards. Within a span of a couple days, he had finished post-production on “The Avengers”; started post-production on a self-financed adaption of “Much Ado About Nothing”; finished shooting on another self-financed film, “In Your Eyes,” which he wrote; and debuted a documentary about comedianon which he produced and Morgan Spurlock directed. A week after our interview, “Cabin in the Woods,” a horror film he co-wrote and produced, opened.

Whedon hates spoilers, so here is a spoiler alert: This interview is long. Unlike the suits at Fox, I don't think I know better than Whedon what form his words ought to take, so i am presenting them more or less verbatim. Read on if you are interested in learning:

-the secret of multitasking

-Whedon's advice for would-be filmmakers who aren't born into screenwriting dynasties like he was

-why he does not use Twitter

-how he feels about the opportunity of another director resurrecting “Buffy”

-why you shouldn't invite Batman to Thanksgiving dinner

-what his favorite superhero films are

-why “Firefly” and “Dollhouse” were totally different kinds of failures

-why he started a “microbudget” studio of his own

-how he realized that his most famed character is really his own alter ego

-what he plans to do next. (Hint: you've not seen the ultimate of Dr. Horrible.)

Bolded for the tl;dr crowd... )

Alan Moore on Watchmen's "poisonous Cloud" and "Creativity versus Big commerce"

With several "Watchmen" prequels looming its iconic writer Alan Moore lashes out at DC comedians and the franchising of art, and speculates where the next big ideas will come from. DC and an IP lawyer weigh in on an episode that transcends one comedian and szeniths to the biggest creativity versus commerce questions.

it is the gift that keeps on giving. While the 25-year-old Watchmen continues to inspire new generations of comedian and graphic novel readers, it has become a bane to its legendary creator, Alan Moore.

Over the years, Moore has famedly feuded with publisher DC comedians over its desire to spin off ancillary Watchmen product, most notably the 2009 film, for which he says he has refused payment. That fight resumed once again this month when DC announced seven summer comedian book prequel mini-series, Before Watchmen, addressing the origins of Watchmen characters, and Moore unleashed several barbed remarks to the press and during a live video stream to bring up money for a Harvey Pekar memorial statue. (Note: the Kickstarter crusade for the Harvey Pekar Statue was fully funded back in December 2011.) Here, Moore, who spoke to Fast Company (about the Pekar project) in November, elaborates further.

Note: Alan Moore is remarks have been bolded.

“My reaction [to the Watchmen prequels] is a sure measure of weary contempt,” says Moore. “it is gone beyond anger. it is nearly tragically comedianal. it is commerce over art. i am proud of the work I did on Watchmen, but it is surrounded by such a poisonous cloud of memories. I wish I didn't must go through them. I don't even have a copy of the book in the house.”

DC Comics unveils full list of Watchmen prequels

DC Comics unveils full list of Watchmen prequels

Rorshach and other characters from 'Watchmen' will get the prequel treatment this summer with weekly 'Before Watchmen' miniseries. Under its DC comedians banner, DC Entertainment is reviving characters from the beloved and seminal graphic novel Watchmen for seven prequels collectively titled Before Watchmen.

The comedians will feature all of the heroes - and anti-heroes - who writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons made in the 1986-87 Watchmen series, which was later collected as a graphic novel. Those characters will star in miniseries by some of the company's top writers and artists

Issues will be released so that there will be a new one every week, and each will include two pages of a separate, continuing backup story, Curse of the Crimson Corsair, by Wein, with art by Watchmen colorist John Higgins.

A unmarried-issue Before Watchmen: Epilogue will also be a part of the prequel series, featuring several of the writers and artists involved. List of titles and artwork for the covers behind the LJ cut.

According to the Guinness World Records, Watchmen is the best-selling graphic novel of all time, with more than 2 million copies sold. notwithstanding, Azzarello first read the series when it came out monthly in the '80s and was a enormous fan 10 years before he broke into the industry.

Azzarello says he "dropped the phone" when DC co-publisher Dan DiDio called him final summer and asked if he'd write the fan-favorite character Rorschach, the vigilante clad in a mask with shifting ink blots who investigates the death of his old friend, The Comedian, in the original Watchmen story. "He is the face. The guy who covers his face is the face of the franchise," Azzarello says. For the four-issue Rorschach series, he is teaming again with Bermejo, the artist from his Joker graphic novel. "you are going to receive the Rorschach that you know and want. it is a very visceral story we are going to be telling,'' Azzarello says.

Man of Steel Set Photos!

Zack Snyder has been slightly more successful than Christopher Nolan in preventing photos from being snapped on the set of his highly-anticipated Superman reboot, Man of Steel.

It helps that Warner Bros. selected to unveil an official image of Henry Cavill in his Superman costume before shooting got fully underway on Snyder's reboot. notwithstanding, that does not mean the amateur paparazzi aren't out in full-force lurking around the Man of Steel set (see: early images of Cavil as Clark Kent).

Today we've a handful of set images that reveal noteworthy details about the costumes of the new incarnations of Superman, the crook Kryptonians General Zod (Michael Shannon) and Faora (Antje Traue) - and possibly even U.S. military man General Swanwick (Harry Lennix).

reasonable warning: Anyone who does not want to know anything about Man of Steel, anyway that which was revealed in the (indistinct) official plot synopsis, should not read on. These set photos only contain gentle SPOILERS, but they still have tinheritor reasonable share of revealing details. you have been warned…

But that is not the only sneak peek of casting to consider; moreover to Metropolis steadys like Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen, Snyder also has to find the correct actor to play his villian, rumored to be General Zod, the "Superman II" antagonist played by Terence Stamp.

Damon Albarn has revealed that the recording sessions for Gorillaz's latest album, Pfinalic Beach, produced approximately 80 songs - enough for two sequel albums.

"Theoretically there's a part two and part three of Pfinalic Beach if we ever felt motivated to spend another few years finishing it," Albarn said in an interview with Spinner.

He added, "But because it is so eclectic, it takes a long time to behaveually get a picture because we don't start with a picture or an idea. We start with a very loose idea of Pfinalic Beach, which, you know, probably means something different to me than it does to Jamie [Hewlett], but we evolve."

The band, who played two London Roundhouse shows final week, also recently performed as a headliner at the Coachella Festival in California.

moreover to tinheritor work in Gorillaz, Albarn and Hewlett are also collaborating with comedian writer Alan Moore on an opera about the life of 16th century royal advisor John Dee.

Sir, the Movie BERLIN -- "Watchmen" star Jeffrey Dean Morgan has signaled on with director Michael Bassett ("Solomon Kane") for the psychological thriller "The Unblinking Eye," which Juliusz Kossakowski and Kevan Van Thompson will produce through tinheritor Wind Fish Motion Pictures operation.

AV Pictures, which also handled world sales on Bassett's "Wilderness," is selling the title in Berlin.

Bassett penned the script, in which murder detective John Callisto (Morgan), now a retired recluse after being almost murdered by a serial killer, is tracked down by a relentless journalist. As the two confront each other, dark secrets from both tinheritor pasts come to light.

The pic, which AV said is budgeted at just over $10 million, is set to shoot in May.

Truthfully? i'd watch him do just about anything and everything as evident by the fact that I own a copy of The Accidental Husband. Also, if these two never do a film together where they play siblings i'll be very disappointed in casting directors everywhere.

Watchmen (Film) Sequel? "Not A Chance" Says Hollywood

Watchmen (Film) Sequel? "Not A Chance" Says Hollywood

Rumors of a comedian book sequel to Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' Watchmen may be racing around the internet, but that does not mean that Warner's film division is tempted to go back to the well again.

An nameless source told Deadline Hollywood's Nikki Finke that we won't be seeing Zack Snyder's Watchmen 2 anytime soon:

There is no truth to anything related to a film sequel. Not a chance by a longshot.

Considering the underperformance of the film at the box office, this does not come as the fantasticest surprise. In related news, former Wizard magazine staffer Sean T. Collins disputes the original rumor's implication that the magazine was involved in some DC comedians discussions about reviving Watchmen:

The sneak peek didn't reflect any inside information of any kind, about the desire to introduce Watchmen's world into continuity, creating new projects involving it or anything else (like doing the same for The Dark Knight Returns, say - that is Frank Miller's dystopian Batman laying the smackdown on Rorschach, of course)... When Wizard staffers realized that readers were taking the published sneak peek to denote that the Watchmen-verse was one of DC's 52 universes and/or that DC would be publishing new Watchmen-based comedians - for which there were no such plans, at least as far as anyone involved with the sneak peek knew - they quickly ran a clarification on the website, which unluckyly is now missing to the the site is reboots.

tbh i would rather a sequel to the film than the graphic novel - at least that wouldn't ruin the actual canon :/
