Mikey Welsh 1971-2011

Dear friends and fans,
It saddens me and the guys in Weezer so much to say that our beautiful, creative, hilarious and candy friend Mikey Welsh has passed away at the very young age of 40. A unique talent, a deeply loving friend and father, and a fantastic artist is gone, but we will never forget him. His chapter in the weezer story ('98 - '01) was imperative, fundamental, wild, and amazing.

The Isaac Hanson Trio covers Weezer's Troublemaker
Posted on Mon, 05 Sep 2011 13:10

Yes, that Hanson covering that Weezer. The Hot 100 No. 1 boys (and brothers) of "Mbop" are now the men of "Shout It Out," which reach No. 2 on the invoiceboard Top Independent Albums chart final year. And they came to the invoiceboard studio to fire up a candy and simple version of Weezer's No. 2 Alternative Songs chart hit.

"Weezer's an amazing band… What i have always admired is the fact that they really have an identifiable shit going, which is sort-of-pop songs -- but heavy," singer Taylor Hanson says of why they went with Weezer for tinheritor Mashup Mondays performance. "'Troublemaker' is such a cool attitude-ridden track."

"Making it a Hanson song was chiefly about the rhythm, having a groove" eldest brother, guitarist Issac explains.

Youngest brother, drum Zac Hanson, adds that the key to the cover was to "not try to be Weezer, and have our own swagger about it."

Not that they must try hard. Not numerous bands can say they have been in a Katy Perry video (final Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)) and on a world tour at the same time. Hanson's run of the U.S. goes through Nov. 1, and then jumps over to South America on Nov. 4 before jumping over to Europe with dates through Jan. 2011.

Listen to Muppets: The Green Album in its entirety

Growing up in the '70s and '80s, I created a promise to myself to never forget what it felt like to be a kid. In a confusing world run by adults, the wonder and innocence of youth seemed like salvation. Of course, as the years ticked by, whatever magic or delight I found in childhood matters eventually faded and gave way to the shadow of inevitable middle age.

luckyly, we've the occasional keepsake to reintellect us of everything we forgot. Muppets: The Green Album, a new collection of Muppet songs covered lovingly by Andrew Bird, My Morning Jacket and other artists, provides one of those reintellecters. Hearing it for the first time ignited a heady rush of blithesome memories and emotions i would not recalled or felt in years.

Flawless music this way. . .  )

OK Go, Weezer, Hayley Williams & More to be featured on Muppets: The Green Album

Frank Sinatra, Van Morrison, Tony Bennett and Ray Charles. What do they've in common, anyway a horde of awards and corridor of Fame memberships?

They all recorded “Bein' Green,” as in “it is Not Easy Being Green” - Kermit the Frog's famed declaration of emeraldness.

Well, add to that distinguished list Andrew Bird, who performs the song on a charming upcoming tribute to the music of the Muppets, which you'll find at Starbucks later this summer. (Beginning August 23, to be summarye.) we are pleased to present for the first time the cover of The Muppets: The Green Album, as well as the track list.

As you see, it is rife with songs that are familiar to generations (the Muppets themselves date to the mid-‘50s) and artists who are in the forefront of music today, including Weezer, My Morning Jacket and Matt Nathanson.

I guess as I scan this list, there is really only one apparent omission. Where is the Muppets house band, Dr. Teeth & the Electric Mayhem?

Muppets: The Green Album Tracklist:
1. OK Go - Muppet Show Theme
2. Weezer and Paramore is Hayley Williams - Rainbow Connection
3. The Fray - Mahna Mahna
4. Alkaline Trio - Moving correct Along
5. My Morning Jacket - Our World
6. Amy Lee - midway Down the Stairs
7. Sondre Lerche - Mr. Bassman
8. The Airborne poisonous Event - Wishing Song
9. Atreyu's Brandon Saller and Good Charlotte is invoicey Martin - Night Life
10. Andrew Bird - Bein' Green
11. Matt Nathanson - I Hope That Something Better Comes Along
12. Rachael Yamagata - i am Going to Go Back There Someday

The album will be available August 23rd.

Weezer's State Farm Jingle Is Really, Really Not Bad
Posted on Thu, 10 Feb 2011 13:51

You will, most likely, have a two-part reaction to the video, above, of Weezer in the studio recording a jingle for State Farm. Part 1: “Ah, what the hell, Weezer? it is like you are sitting at domestic actively thinking of ways to make yourselves seem lamer. Would it have killed you to at least write a song for a commercial for something awesome, like vodka or blunt wraps or something?” Part 2: “Wait, hold on a moment - this song is amazing.” And it is now that moment part that Vulture would very much like you to focus on.

Yes, it is incredibly odd that Weezer has chosen the occasion of a car-insurance-company jingle to momentarily recapture a sound that a vocal subset of tinheritor fan base has long clamored for (this basically sounds like a Pinkerton B-side, particularally “Getting Up and Leaving”). But is not the more crucial takeaway here the fact that Rivers Cuomo, who long ago evolved into a prolific, slick-hit-writing mercenary, is able to so convincingly ape his former self? perhaps, next time, he'll actually do it on a Weezer album! Okay, sing along now: “Whenever you are driving / and wherever you are bound / on freeways and byways / the whole country round / you'll feel better knowing / any time, any where / that like a good neighbor / State Farm is there.”

The Next Chinese Democracy: Music's most overdue albums
Posted on Sat, 29 Jan 2011 18:19

hypothesis gets the best of us. We feed on it. it is sort of like satan's food cake, or something candy and alarmingly harmful to our diet. We know it is unhealthy for us, but we can not help but return to its flavor. More often than not, hypothesis runs the music industry.

Day in and day out, artists drop cryptic hints at everything they are involved in: an LP, a tour, a reunion, a breakup, or, sometimes, a collaboration. Some stay true to tinheritor words (e.g. Jack White), others forget about them (e.g. Dr. Dre). Fans never do, notwithstanding. that is why you've countless legions of enthusiasts, all raving about this and that, when this and that never amounted to anything, anyhow. But, it is fun, nonetheless. it is why folks continue slaving away on message boards and searching the footpaper money of Wikipedia, all looking for more.

The truth is out there.

Ah, of course. The quest for truth. Well, in this industry, truth is what you hold in your hands, whether it be a ticket or a sealed LP. Nothing is sure until it is a product. Take Guns N' Roses 2008 myth-turned-reality, Chinese Democracy. For 14 years, the album drove hypothesis to epic heights. People bootlegged shows, they squandered over demos, they debated over lineup changes, and they held onto every indistinct quote that Axl Rose spit out. It became a deep-seated fascination that could not, and wouldn't, die… that is, until that destinyful Sunday morning in November, when fans strolled into Best Buy and ended tinheritor “pain” and “suffering.” Although, for some, it just began.“so fuckin party you will die” )

Miranda Cosgrove and Rivers Cuomo Collaborating
Posted on Fri, 14 Jan 2011 09:15

obviously Rivers Cuomo and Miranda Cosgrove are collaborating on a song.

This would appear to be a pretty big "get" for Cosgrove, star of Nick's iCarly.

Is it me, or is Rivers Cuomo everywhere these days?
